San Diego Bee Initiative ‘Will Change People’s Perspective’

San Diego’s decision to join a pollinator protection initiative will help people to “have a different view of bees“, a city council member has claimed.

Marni von Wilpert said she was convinced that the Californian city’s endorsement of the Bee City USA project would raise people’s consciousness of the vital role the insects have due to their pollination of flowers and plants.

The Democratic councillor told the San Diego Union-Tribune: “It’s nice to have a different view of bees and not necessarily just be afraid.”

Von Wilpert added it was essential to “become more aware of the work they’re doing in our world.”

Bee City USA is a non-government association which promotes the protection of habitats in more than 150 cities and towns. Its organisers are also trying to encourage city officials to use as few pesticides as possible to avert the further demise of species.

San Diego Council member Joe LaCava has been one of the driving forces of the city’s Bee City USA affiliation which, according to Californian media, could lead to the creation of additional rooftop gardens and stronger support for sustainable tourism offers.

The San Diego Union-Tribune quotes LaCava as saying: “Bee City USA is not just a designation. It’s a commitment to biodiversity, pollinators and reducing harmful pesticide use.”
