Road Maintenance Staff Install Apiary After Finding Swarm

Road maintenance workers in southern Austria have set up an apiary after discovering a bee swarm gathering at their premises.

Employees of the Straßenmeisterei Rosental in Ferlach, Carinthia, are harvesting honey ever since they installed the colonies at their facility around three years ago.

Team member Karl Zupan – who is a passionate leisure-time apiarist – found the swarm of pollinators. Karl receives support from two colleagues in managing the hives.

He told the Kronen Zeitung: “The bees seem to be happy with the location. The honey harvest has been more than satisfying.”

Bread with honey from their own hives is reportedly the favourite after-work snack of the Straßenmeisterei Rosental staff.

Ferlach is a small town situated 18 kilometres (11 miles) south of Klagenfurt, the provincial capital.
