A science journalist who tries to strengthen biodiversity in Zürich has said her engagement is “rewarding.”
Bettina Walch quit her job at Swiss broadcaster SRF to support her former colleague Isabella Sedivy at Plan Biodivers, a communication agency focusing on environmental issues.
Reflecting on the numerous occasions they managed to convince businesspeople and politicians to opt for the installation of additional green spaces, the journalist who grew up in Liechtenstein said: “Being able to make a difference is rewarding.”
Bettina told the Schweizer Familie magazine: “We may earn a bit less now. However, we are utterly happy.”
Isabella explained: “Our target is to break up as many tarmac surfaces as possible. Domestic plants should grow there.”
The Plan Biodivers founder warned: “Tarmac is causing extreme heat in summer. Furthermore, it can lead to flooding.”
The biologist emphasised that even small meadows can function as habitats for bees, bugs and butterflies.
Isabella and Bettina have nicknamed themselves ‘The Tarmac Crackers.’ Despite tiring struggles with red tape, the award-winning duo has managed to finalise around a dozen projects.
Isabella, who is determined to increase her efforts, underlined: “Each of them was worth it.”
Having managed to raise awareness among citizens, entrepreneurs and lawmakers in Zürich, Bettina and Isabella are now ready to tackle issues across the country.
