Engineering Student’s Beekeeping Passion Is Still Buzzing 27 Years On

An Argentine beekeeper who started out as a student more than 25 years ago has offered an insight perspective on his booming business.

Today, Mauricio Gramuglia’s company Apoidea not just provides their creamy, non-drip honey to more than 20 shops in the city of Tandil, eastern Argentina. The firm also receives orders for their product from all over the country.

However, the passionate apiarist’s beginnings were anything but overambitious.

Speaking to the news website TN, Mauricio explained that he was studying systems engineering when a friend suggested starting a beekeeping business together back in 1996.

Over the years, the perseverant small team managed to increase their number of regular customers by offering high-quality products.

Asked why he decided to concentrate on making creamy honey, the Apoidea CEO described the procedure as ” the most feasible way to achieve a niche that was not covered in Tandil.”

On his business website, Mauricio – who receives support from his partner, their daughter and his brother-in-law – praises his honey as a “unique and differentiated product.”

He explains: “It has a pleasant, smooth and high-quality texture, preserving its flavour and natural, nutritional and healing properties.”

Asked by TN to specify the characteristics of his range, Mauricio said: “What is achieved is a honey that does not drip. It is most useful as a spread, although there are many ways to consume it.”

Speaking about his customers’ preferences, he explained: “Many choose it because it doesn’t drip as much.”

According to Mauricio, Apoidea honey is very popular among renowned Argentine confectioners.

Argentina is one of the world’s leading producers of honey.

The Southern American country’s 13,700 beekeepers managed around 3.4 million hives as of July 2020, according to research agency Statista.
